Personality development: learning how to let your child become their own individual appropriately
In today’s world, there are so many different ideologies and viewpoints that kids are exposed to on a regular basis. During a child’s developmental years which usually take place between middle school and high school, they begin to form a set of moral principles by which the foundation of the rest of their life will be based upon. As a parent you want to make sure that you give your child the freedom to express themselves and hold their own views which may be separate from yours, however, you also want to make sure that your child is developing principles that will benefit them in their adult life.
Character development is probably one of the most difficult parts of being a parent. You don’t want to stifle your child with your beliefs however you don’t want to allow your children to be susceptible to any random ideology or world view. One of the best ways to encourage individual character development without being too assertive is by talking with your children.
Talk to your child about their life goals and aspirations to see how you as a parent can provide them with the tools they need to accomplish those goals and become their own person. For example, if your child tells you that they have dreams of becoming a doctor, see if there are any programs that you can enroll them in before college so that they will have an advantage.
If your child tells you that they want to become a humanitarian, encourage them to enlist in programs that help underprivileged people in your local area so they can establish a solid foundation of charity. There are several ways that you as a parent can help guide your child in the right direction of becoming the person that they want to be without directly imputing your world views onto them.
While it’s healthy to allow your child to develop their own sense of individual values and perspectives, you also want to make sure that your child is growing into world views that are productive so that they avoid dangerous situations. There are a lot of ways that you as a parent can encourage healthy growth in your child without stifling them in belief systems that you hold as an individual.
Proper character development in children encompasses multiple aspects which all play a role in building the overall person that they will become in the future. Have regular conversations with your child about the direction that their life is heading in so that you can always remain on top of how they are developing as an individual.
Communication, when combined with guidance, is a powerful tool which will help your kid develop strong internal values that they can carry throughout their life. Allow your child to experience life and grow on their own while maintaining a tight relationship where they feel comfortable talking to you about the direction that their life is heading.
